This course is designed for:

- Anyone requiring CSCS accreditation for underground services
Prerequisites
Candidates must have:
- Valid SOLAS Safepass or CSR card
- Photographic ID (passport or driver’s licence)
- PPS Number
- Minimum 18 years old
- 1 passport photo
- At least 9 months’ experience operating as a candidate LUGS operator in construction
- B1 level of English (no interpreters allowed)
- Good colour vision, hearing, full use of trunk & neck
- Physical ability to lift and carry 6kg cones and traffic signs
Course Aim
The aim of this course is to provide attendees with the skills and knowledge to safely locate underground services before any excavation, road-cutting, or construction work. Delegates will learn to prevent damage to utilities, ensure site safety, and comply with all legal and health & safety requirements.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand relevant legislation for street works and excavation
- Identify hazards associated with different underground services
- Apply safe working procedures for excavations
- Operate Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) in all modes: Power, Radio, Genny
- Use CAT for searching, pinpointing, and tracing
- Use Genny for induction, direct connection, and clamping
- Troubleshoot lost signals, nulling out, and depth finding
- Implement excavation safety and backfilling best practices
- Apply signing, lighting & guarding requirements for roadworks
- Maintain health & safety compliance on all streetworks projects
- Demonstrate practical competence in locating and avoiding underground services
Assessment Method
- Classroom-based theory training
- Practical exercises using excavator/banksman to safely excavate around live underground services
- Delegates must demonstrate safe and competent use of CAT and Genny equipment
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants will receive:
- CSCS ID Card
- QQI Certification valid for 5 years
This ensures operatives and supervisors are fully qualified to safely locate underground utilities and comply with legislation in Ireland.
