Who Should Attend
This course is ideal for delegates engaged in excavation work across a variety of settings, including roads, construction sites, parks, and industrial estates.
It is particularly suited to those responsible for enforcing safe digging and excavation practices, reducing risks to both personnel and underground services.
Prerequisites
Delegates must bring suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Safety Boots
- Helmet
- Gloves
- Hi-Vis Coat or Vest
- Hearing Protection
A valid EUSR photo ID card is also required.
Course Aim
This EUSR Category 1 & 2 training course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical skills to:
- Use standard location equipment to accurately identify underground services.
- Recognise typical services and understand techniques for locating services not detectable using standard equipment.
- Apply safe excavation practices during holes and trench maintenance, including the use of manual and handheld power tools.
- Complete both theoretical and practical assessments to demonstrate competence in safe excavation and utility detection.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Interpret utility plan drawings and understand symbols and coded information.
- Prepare and operate location equipment to detect a wide range of underground services.
- Identify the dangers and hazards associated with underground services.
- Recognise why some services are more difficult to locate.
- Carry out accurate site marking using appropriate methods.
- Ensure all location, marking, and site safety measures are correctly implemented before excavation begins.
- Identify hazards related to excavations and select appropriate safe digging techniques.
Assessment Method
- Classroom-based theory covering utility location and excavation safety.
- Practical demonstration of locating underground services and safe excavation procedures.
Accreditation
Delegates who successfully complete the course will receive an EUSR accredited certificate, valid for 3 years, demonstrating competence in locating utility services and implementing safe excavation practices.
