This EUSR Category 1 training course is ideal for delegates engaged in excavation work across a variety of settings, including roads, construction sites, parks, and industrial estates.
It is suitable for operatives, supervisors, and site managers who need to accurately locate underground services and maintain safe excavation practices.
Prerequisites
Delegates must bring suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Safety Boots
- Helmet
- Gloves
- Hi-Vis Coat or Vest
- Hearing Protection
A valid EUSR photo ID card is also required.
Course Aim
This course provides delegates with the knowledge and practical skills to:
- Correctly operate standard location equipment for detecting underground services.
- Recognise typical utility services and understand techniques for locating services that cannot be detected using equipment alone.
- Apply safe excavation procedures while performing utility location tasks.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Interpret utility plan drawings and identify symbols and coded information.
- Prepare and use location equipment to identify a wide range of underground services.
- Identify hazards associated with underground services.
- Recognise why certain services are more difficult to locate.
- Carry out accurate site marking using appropriate methods.

- Classroom-based theory covering utility detection and excavation safety.
- Practical demonstration of locating underground services and applying safe excavation techniques.
Accreditation
Delegates who successfully complete the course receive an EUSR accredited certificate, valid for 3 years, demonstrating competence in locating utility services and implementing safe excavation practices.
