The Lantra 12D T5 Training and M5 Assessment course in Northern Ireland is designed for Registered Traffic Management Operatives (RTMOs) who need to safely install, operate, maintain, and dismantle multi-phase traffic signals. This Lantra-approved training ensures compliance with National Highways Sector Scheme (NHSS) 12D standards.

Delivered at our Portadown HQ, the course combines theoretical knowledge with assessments to prepare delegates for practical traffic management situations on urban and rural roads.

Course Aim

The course equips delegates with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and safety awareness required to manage multi-phase traffic signal systems safely and in compliance with NHSS 12D.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, delegates will:

  • Understand National Highways Sector Schemes (NHSS 12D)
  • Be aware of Health & Safety responsibilities

  • Know relevant Codes of Practice and documentation for traffic management
  • Identify the equipment required for Temporary Traffic Management (TTM)
  • Understand how to install, operate, and maintain multi-phase traffic signals
  • Recognise the needs of non-motorised road users
  • Be prepared to demonstrate practical competence in T5/M5 assessments

Assessment Method

  • Multiple-choice exam – pass mark 75%
  • On-site practical assessment (required for full certification within 2 years)

Delegates must complete both to achieve full M5 award under Lantra’s guidelines.

Certification

Upon successful completion, delegates receive a Lantra Awards certificate confirming competence in 12D T5 / M5 traffic management. Full award completion requires passing the on-site assessment within two years.
