The MEWP Scissor & Boom (Novice) Training Course is designed to prepare new and inexperienced operators to safely use Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) in a variety of working environments. This course provides the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to operate scissor lifts and boom lifts confidently, responsibly, and in line with manufacturer instructions and workplace regulations.

This MEWP course is suitable for novice operators who are required to prepare and safely operate various types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), including scissor lifts and boom lifts.
It is ideal for:

No previous MEWP operating experience is required.
Course Aim
The aim of this course is to provide operators with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate MEWPs, with a focus on scissor lifts and boom lifts.
Participants will learn how to:
- Identify hazards and assess risks
- Understand legal and safety requirements
- Carry out pre-use checks and inspections
- Operate MEWPs safely and efficiently
- Work in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and workplace regulations
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, candidates will be able to:
- Understand scissor lift and boom lift (MEWP) hazards, risks, and environmental considerations
- Know operator roles, responsibilities, and PPE requirements
- Identify key MEWP components, controls, and manufacturer specifications
- Conduct pre-use inspections, daily maintenance checks, and defect reporting
- Recognise safe ground conditions and factors affecting stability and load capacity
- Operate MEWPs safely, including manoeuvring at height and using platform extensions
- Apply safe loading practices and respond correctly to warning devices
- Plan for emergencies, including safe lowering and emergency procedures
- Carry out safe parking, isolation, and shutdown procedures
Training & Assessment Method
This course combines:
- Classroom-based tutorials
- Hands-on demonstrations
- Practical operating exercises
Delegates must successfully complete:
- A practical assessment
- A theory assessment
Both elements must be passed to achieve certification.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will be awarded an ITS Certificate, confirming their competence to safely operate MEWPs.
This certificate serves as recognised proof of training and qualification.
