The NRSWA Excavation in the Highway (Operative O2 / Supervisor S2) course provides essential skills and knowledge for anyone involved in the excavation and reinstatement of footpaths and highways. This practical, hands-on training ensures delegates can work safely, efficiently, and fully in line with New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) requirements.

Delivered by experienced industry trainers, this course includes live site training, practical assessments, and real-world scenarios to reinforce safe excavation techniques and compliance.

Operatives will complete the O2 Excavation in the Highway unit, while supervisors complete the S2 Monitoring Excavation unit.

Prerequisites

  • Delegates must be 16 years or older
  • Must be medically fit in line with current industry standards
  • No previous NRSWA qualification required

Assessment Method

Successful delegates receive the relevant NRSWA unit accreditation (O2/S2).

Required PPE

Delegates must bring:

  • Fluorescent jacket
  • Long-sleeve overalls/workwear (no shorts permitted)
  • Gloves
  • Safety boots
  • Waterproof clothing
  • Ear defenders
  • Goggles
  • Hard hat
  • FFP3 dust mask

Without appropriate PPE, delegates may not be able to participate in all practical elements.

Certification

Upon successful completion, delegates will receive a NRSWA-approved certificate and unit accreditation, valid in line with national street works requirements.
